Gentlemen, Start Your Smartphones

Hyundai will be using NFC technology to eliminate car keys on their newest models (www.wired.com).  NFC is the coolest technology that is not currently being taken advantage of.  Apple doesn't even employ near field communication in their newest iPhone 5s.  NFC can eliminate the need of credit cards, house keys, car keys, drivers licenses, and everything else we lug around every day.  Imagine a world where you only have to carry around your smartphone...  It is already possible to create this world with NFC.  Google is already on the path toward this world with GoogleWallet.  With Hyundai's help, we'll be there soon.

  1. Very cool. In the long run I can see this being much more secure. Soon locks will no longer rely on physical keys, but 512bit keys that have proven strength. It just means I'll have to keep my phone doubly secure.

    1. Combine it with fingerprint recognition and you've got the perfect solution.

  2. Apple seems to be using their crystal balls to determine that NFC is not the future. Their bets are centered on Bluetooth Low Energy. It is similar to NFC, but the allowable distance is MUCH greater. This would allow you to pay for an item without even having to go to the cash register and tap your phone.

    1. It's hard for me to see why you would need more range, isn't that what bluetooth is for?

  3. I remember back in 2003-2004 when the PSP came out and people were raving about how it could do everything: movies, music, and games. I remember thinking, "What if it breaks or I lose it?" I thought that I would rather have my entertainment spread between multiple devices... just in case. Diversification is generally considered a wise practice with money, so why not with technology? If we're going to put everything we need into one device, then the technology better be very secure and very recoverable. Until then, let's not put all our eggs in one basket.

    1. this is a valid comment but if you can unlock you phone with fingerprint recognition, it eliminates many of the problems.
